Vincent Van Gogh

We studied Vincent Van Gogh – his life and his Art. We learned that his favourite colour was yellow. Using the three primary colours – red, yellow and blue we mixed our palettes to create the wonderful colours needed for “The Sunflowers”. We displayed our own masterpieces in the hall.

Poetry Time

We composed our very own poetry collection which we displayed in the corridor. We wrote about colours, our wish list and feelings.

Camping

We had great fun playing camping. Hugh and Ryan booked us into the campsite and told us the rules. Riley was in charge of the shop.

Pets

We enjoyed writing about our pets. We read our stories to the class afterwards. Mark loves his cat Puddins. Bobby rescued his dog Charlie and gave her a lovely home. Jack is looking forward to getting a kitten at Christmas.

All about China

We learned all about China and the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year lasts for fifteen days. 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. On the last day they have a lantern festival.

China has a population of 8.4 billion people. The capital city is Beijing. Mount Everest is part of the Himalayas. The two main rivers are the Yangtze and the Yellow River.

The Great Wall of China was built many years ago to protect China from enemy attacks. It is over 8ooo kilometres long.

Chinese people grow a lot of rice. Rice is grown in Paddy Fields.

Locality

We did a project on important places near where we live and go to school.

Bobby wrote about New Ross, our nearest town. He told us about some famous people from town. Michael O’ Hanrahan fought in the 1916 Rising. The bridge is called after him.

Ryan discovered that the River Barrow is one of the Three Sisters – The Barrow, the Nore and the Suir. It starts in County Laois and enters the sea at Waterford.

Jack wrote about the fort in Duncannon. It was used as a defence against attack from the sea. Jack loves to play on the beach and has often seen big jellyfish there.

Riley loves old ships so he read about the Dunbrody. It is a copy of a famine ship which brought Irish people to America in the 1800s. Lots of visitors go on board every year to see what life was like long ago.

Hugh learned a lot about John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of America. His great grandfather left New Ross for America. John F. Kennedy visited the town in 1963. He was assassinated later that year.

Mark loves Kilkenny and hurling. He told us that the Cats have won the All Ireland Hurling Final 36 times. Mark plays for Glenmore, their jersey is green and yellow.

Science Week

We had great fun when the Lismore Science Workshop visited our school. We saw how fircton created static energy as Hugh’s hair stood up. We dropped flowers into water and watched the petals open. Water is very important for plant life.

Baking soda is a base and lemon is an acid so when we put them together they caused a chemical reaction which made the glove inflate.

We predicted which would touch the floor first when Saoirse dropped a feather and a ball. The ball did.

Our favourite was the volcano. We put vinegar and baking soda together with some red food colouring to create a volcano.

Fire Safety

Two men came to Shanbogh to speak  about Fire Safety. They showed us how to remain safe in school and at home. We listened to a carbon monoxide and smoke alarm. They were very loud! We learned how to put a person in the recovery position. We will carry out a fire safety checklist at home. We all received fire safety awards.

Daniel O’Connell

For the past few weeks we learned about Daniel O’ Connell. He was a great leader and was a great influence. He hated violence. He helped grant Catholic Emancipation in Ireland. He spent time in jail for fighting for freedom for Ireland. He was known as the Liberator. O’ Connell Street and O’ Connell Station is named after him in Dublin.

Fabric and Fibre turtles

We made turtles out of wool for Art. We glued 3 lollipop sticks together and then we had to weave different colours of wool around the lollipop sticks. We then drew smiley faces on the turtles.

Making crystals

We did a science experiment to try and make crystals. We were learning about the way rocks form. To make our crystals we put salt, baking soda and sugar into 3 different containers. We stirred them until everything dissolved in hot water. We left the containers to cool at room temperature and then waited to see what would happen.

Fabric and Fibre Dogs

First we got pictures of dogs and cut them out. We added pieces of material and scrap paper to create dog collages. They were inspired by the artist Michel Keck.

The Normans

We learned all about the Normans in Ireland. The Normans first arrived in Bannow Bay, Co. Wexford in 1169. They built Motte and Bailey castles and stone castles in Ireland. In Art we made Norman castles in groups. We put cardboard boxes together, then we put paper maché on them, afterwards we painted the castles. In science we made Norman catapults. They all turned out really good.

European Projects

In November our class did projects on countries from Europe. Everyone got to pick a country from Europe and research some interesting facts about history, culture, famous landmarks and famous people. Some people typed or wrote their projects and made posters or small books. Others made Prezi presentations. We had great fun presenting our projects to the class.

Science Workshop

On Monday 21st November, the Primary Lismore Mobile Science Workshops came to Shanbogh N.S. Edel Ormonde from Lismore taught us two workshops – Shocking Science and Chemistry Kids.

First we did the Shocking Science workshop. We were learning about electricity. We learned how to make simple, series and parallel circuits. We added buzzers and switches to the circuits.

After lunch we did the Chemistry Kids workshop. We learned about acids, bases and PH scales. We learned that thunder has 1,000,000 bolts. We did an experiment that we mixed baking soda with vinegar together. It made a volcano. We saw that if you put it near fire it would go out without touching it. We learned a lot. It was very fun.

Maths Week

From the 15th-23rd of October, Shanbogh N.S participated in Maths Week. We all enjoyed various Maths activities, including a poster full of maths brain teasers. The senior room made 2D shapes, took surveys, drew graphs and played Planet Maths. On  Maths websites, we played a parody of a famous game show, Who wants to be a Millionaire, but it was called Who Wants to be a Mathionaire. We also played games that included problem solving, fractions, decimals and data. It was a great week and all the students were happy with Maths Week 2016.
