The Active Schools initiative aims to improve children’s health by making them more active throughout the day. Our Active Schools Committee – Róisín, Ashley, Tom, Sarah, Ava and Liam – has worked hard all year to help make our school become fitter and healthier.
We held our Active Schools Week from May 5th to 8th, with our Sports Day on May 11th. We experienced lots of different sports and activities, some for the very first time.
The following link provides information about physical activity events running in the local area. Take a look to see what’s coming up next.

Kickboxing
For Active Schools Week Terry, Emma and Lee came to teach us kick boxing. They brought bags filled with gloves and pads. They also brought shields that we used to kick. Terry focused on our punching while Lee and Emma showed us kicks.
First of all Terry gave us a talk about why people do kick boxing. When he was finished , we warmed up. We did jumping jacks, strides, high knees, high heels and same arm, same leg.
Then we started punching kicking pads and shields. People who were punching did jab, cross and hook. People who were kicking did front kicks and roundhouses.
After that we did a hundred straights. Then when we were finished the punches we did exercises including sit-ups , push-ups and squats. Then we did stretches. Finally we got in a photograph with our instructors. We all had a great time. Many people said that they wanted to start kick boxing. We hope Terry will do another class for our school.

Modern Dance
On Friday 8th, the last day of Active Schools Week, Anne Marie Cooney came and taught us Modern Dance. We started with a quick warm-up then danced to Up Town Funk.
We were in three rows for the dance. Each row got to make up their own moves for twelve beats. Everyone came up with creative moves. We really had fun doing the dance and hope Anne Marie can come again.

Active Break Times
Our school is trying to get the Active Schools Flag. Every Tuesday we play a game with the whole school. We learn how to play the game on this day and then we play it during other break times.
We played Capture the Flag, Bulldogs, Cat and Mouse, Chain Tag, Cops and Robbers, Touch and Go and Tip the Can. They were all fun games. My favourite game was touch and Go. In Touch and Go you touch the person who is on and then run and hide. The person who is on can only take 5 steps to find them. They have to close their eyes and count down from 20. The next time they will count down from 19, then 18 and so on.
I enjoy playing these games and I want to play more.

Basketball and Soccer with Ger!
Ger Feeney, a trainer from Ross Celtic F.C ,came to our school to train us for the 5-A-Side. Ger taught us how to do lots of skills including step overs, rainbow flicks, dribbling and headers.
We played games with Ger like Chain Tag, The End Zone and Mini World Cup and a game where there is two teams. When Ger calls out a number, for example, four, two people who are number four from each team run to the other team’s base. They then try and kick the ball out of the box. Whoever kicks the ball out first wins! Our favourite games are Mini World Cup and The End Zone.
After the Easter holidays we started basketball with Ger. We did some skills like bouncing a ball on top of another, bouncing a ball with our left hand and our right hand and then both hands together. We also learned how to do the chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass. We played the End Zone in basketball too. At the end, we were separated into two teams and had to get the basketball into the hoop. The team with the least points won. We had a great time doing all the sports. We look forward to our next visit from Ger.

F.A.I SOCCER
Our school was involved in the 5 Aside F.A.I Soccer League. Everyone from 3rd to 6th Class was involved. We arrived at New Ross Celtic at 10am. Each team played three games. The boys team won two and lost one game, while the girls team lost two games and drew one.
The Parents Association treated us to Four Star Pizza back at the school. We got three slices each. It was yummy!
